I’m not assuming you’re bored during social distancing. You should be so lucky, right? But maybe, like me, you need a break from screens at this moment more than ever. Maybe you (in the wake of having to see your friends’ faces on zoom with a different kind of emotional resonance than in person bonding provides) need to have experiences where emotional things get in there…like reading…..But they shouldn’t get in there too much and leave you feeling worse off than before because there’s already enough stuff to feel bad about. You can just log onto Facebook for that. Well, you’re in luck.
I’m a literarily overeducated queer mom who can’t take bad writing but doesn’t want to get depressed from reading. What does that make me? A super picky reader! Full disclosure, before this shut-in time, I rarely finished a book. I would start a chick lit book because I like the theme and toss it away because I couldn’t take the sexism. I would start a mystery novel and put it aside because I no longer cared who got killed or why. I would start a high literature book and despair in the horrors of the world. You get the point. I need something to hold my attention (and I’m guessing you do too), and we need that now more than ever. Well, I’ve been finishing books. And if I finished them, they can’t be that bad. I’m gonna review them for you in brief. I’m not gonna spoiler alert them with huge plot summaries and all that. I am just gonna tell you what’s up with the read and what’s not -, and I am going to throw in some personal narrative commentaries about how and why I did or didn’t connect with parts of the book. And finally, if you read the review and want the book, I will give it to you…if you live near me and want to come pick it up from my fence. I will spray it with Lysol first.
The books will be all over the genre spectrum just like I am. To find the posts, just click on blog on the upper right or find the word blog in the menu if you are reading this on a phone. Enjoy.
